In most cases, no. Maryland allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can typically be seen without a physician's prescription. Some plans may require a referral for treatment or reimbursement. If you're unsure, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask whether a prescription is required.

Your first appointment — about 60 minutes — begins with a thorough history and a detailed hands-on evaluation to identify not just where it hurts, but why. In most cases you'll receive treatment and a home exercise program that same day, along with a clear plan for moving forward.
